So much so that he refused to talk to them. But Maxwell Cartwright Jr.’s father could not do the same, no matter how hard he tried. Neighbors all around him did this well, coaxing crop after crop from the rich Wisconsin soil. His father had struggled for years to make the family farm viable, to squeeze life from the land.
